For you process junkies, here's a side-by-side of my inked page next to my digital color work on it.

This is the first of a 4-page story, written by Ken Eppstein, for his rock-n-roll/horror anthology, Nix Comics Quarterly. This story will appear in issue #4, which is at the printers NOW, and will be in stores by the end of the year. Ordering and release information is available at Nix Comics' website - [link]

About 10x15", ink on watercolor paper; color in Photoshop CS5.5.

Awesome. Have you ever thought about doing a comic based on WWII soldiers/marines? Your style is so expressive and I think, if there's any interest, you'd do it great.

Thanks! It's something I've never really thought about at all, but I agree - it does make for great, grimy visuals.

I love the yellow picture/panel. The explosion effect is awesome.

Thanks! It's kind of an otherworldly flashback effect that I used again in some later panels, to separate the two different story strings.

Wow, I always dig your black and white work, but the color piece is really nice on this one. Pretty cool.

Thanks Steve! I was pretty happy with the color on this one too, and ended up doing some pretty expressive stuff with the rest of the story as well. Maybe all this graphic design work I've been doing for the last 8 years is teaching me a little bit about color

Perhaps after the book is out, I'll post more unlettered color pages here.

Are you an actual published comic book artist?

Is this how all comic book artists color their work?

Yes, I have a pretty lengthy bibliography. Here's a pretty current list: [link]

As far as I have seen, this is indeed how most every comics artist colors their work, with the exception of painters like Alex Ross or David Mack.

Wow. That's incredible.

Does every comic book artist have to color using digital means? Because i really want to to illustrate for graphic novels, but colored pencil is my main medium.

By no means. Digital is just the most efficient, cost-effective, and reliable technique available to us, as there is no scanning or photographing involved. Most physical techniques require a scan or a photograph to be made, and there are thousands upon thousands of problems with trying to capture color correctly and reliably, then turn around and reproduce it again in print and have it look remotely the same as the original. The artist usually ends up annoyed, or even devastated that their masterpiece printed ridiculously bad. Digital skips those steps, so what you lay down is much closer to the finished product. There are still differences brought about by monitor calibration, paper stock variances, printer quirks, and on and on and on, but there will always be obstacles. It's just that with digital color, there are fewer obstacles.

Oh, that, and the UNDO command...
