February News

Tue Feb 5, 2013, 10:30 AM
SPACE (Small Press & Alternative Comics Expo):

I have just learned that I received a second-place award for Best Short Story in the SPACE prize awards for 2012 for the story "The Only Two", with writer and frequent collaborator Tony Goins in PANEL volume 18. This was quite a shock and a pleasant surprise, as I've been doing these short projects for such a long time with no thought to who might read and enjoy it; I just do them for my own edification and creative expression. The 13th-annual SPACE convention will take place on April 13-14, right here in my own hometown of Columbus, Ohio, and issues of PANEL 18 will be available for sale at the PANEL comics table for 4 bucks. If you cannot make it out to SPACE, you can order copies directly from the Ferret Press website. I'll post a page or two here in my gallery, as I'm quite happy with the results.

OHIO ART LEAGUE

The Ohio Art League is hosting a Comics Creation Process Exhibit at their gallery on the Ohio State University south campus from February 7-23. This includes an exhibit of comics art and process sketches from a number of Ohio artists, including several of my own. The opening reception is this Thursday, February 7th, from 5-8pm. Please stop by if you can, and take advantage of the workshops and discussions the League is hosting throughout the month. Columbus is a place for comics.

ROSEWOOD ARTS CENTRE

There are a limited number of seats available for the Comic Book Studio Day workshops at Kettering, Ohio's Rosewood Arts Centre on March 30th. I'll be leading two sessions: one for adults, and one for kids, about creating comics. I'll hit on subjects like production, storytelling techniques, drawing figures, and inking/finishing techniques, as well as whatever subjects arise during the sessions. You can register at the Rosewood Arts Centre's website, linked below. Sign up to guarantee a spot.

50,000 PAGE VIEWS

The big number lumbers ever closer. I'm still committed to provide an original drawing to the first person to send me a notification with a screen shot showing the big 50K. Maybe nobody will claim it... maybe someone will. Good luck!

Fri Jan 18, 2013, 11:43 AM
So I just crossed over 49,000 views, en route to 50,000. Which I think is pretty cool, in my own small way. So I wanted to make sure and publicly thank you faithful few who follow so closely, and the others who just happen upon my gallery by chance. You folks make this fun, and keep me encouraged to continue to update regularly. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

So I just wanted to throw this out - if you are visitor number 50,000, take a screencap for proof and shoot me a message, and I'll do an original 9x12" piece of art for you. Sometimes things go screwy and more than one person sees the number in question, so I'll give the award to the FIRST person who contacts me; I don't really have the space in the schedule to make more than one :(

Anyways, thanks again, and keep an eye on the journal footer, as I'll keep updating it with my appearance schedule throughout the year. There are lots of UN-confirmed dates in the mix, but I'm only putting the confirmed appearances on the list. And as always, if I'm coming to a city near you, I'd love to meet you! Stop by and introduce yourself.

AKRON, November 10!

Mon Oct 29, 2012, 10:10 AM
The merciful last stop on the 2012 comics tour is AKRON COMICON, November 10th at the University of Akron student union in Akron, Ohio (home of DEVO!). As always, I will be open to pre-orders for pick-up at the show. And, as usual, I will be bringing a large selection of pre-drawn art priced anywhere from $20 to $150, as well copies of many of my published comics, and several new-for-2012 11x14" prints, priced at $10 each, or 2 for $15. I'll also have a few copies of the brand new VOICES of the DEADWORLD trade paperback, for which I've provided some brand new art. I'll be doing con sketches all day as well, at $20 a pop! I'll be seated at table #A27. Check it out!

New news: on March 30, I've been invited to do a pair of comic-book art workshops at the Rosewood Arts Centre in Kettering, Ohio. I'll have one for kids, and another for adults. The plan is to discuss the more comic-book specific parts of it all, with an emphasis on visual storytelling and page design & layout. If you're in or near the Dayton area, I'd love to see you there. It's still early in the planning stages, so there aren't a lot of details I can share just yet. But keep an eye on this space, and the Rosewood Arts Centre's website, for further information.

I have a HUGE BACKLOG of con sketches and commissions to share with you; I hope to start posting new art this week.

KOKOMO, October 20!

Mon Oct 1, 2012, 7:53 AM
Holy smokes, Wizard's Ohio Comicon was great! Say what you will about Wizard's transition to a no-longer-comic-con, but they do bring crowds of happy people into the building! My sketch list was DANGEROUSLY out of hand for a while, but in the end, everyone who requested a drawing got one. So thanks to the cool people who came by for helping make my weekend a fun and memorable one.

Next up on the exhaustive fall comics tour is the small-but-scrappy KOKOMO-CON, in lovely Kokomo, Indiana. This is their third year on the scene, and it's always a pleasure to be a part of.

FOR THIS SHOW ONLY, 9x12 single-character ink sketches are only $20 when booked on-site! Time will be limited, so get there early!

As always, I will be open to pre-orders for pick-up at the show, which will be priced as normal, and will be much more detailed.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Wed Oct 26, 2011, 8:09 PM
Hey, long time no see.

Crazy times lately! I've not had a moment to update this journal or add much new work, but hopefully that will change now.

The big news? I'm in a new job. The publisher I've been working for for the last 8+ years went out of business abruptly at the end of August, so I spent much of September looking for work. As luck would have it, I stepped into a contract job at Highlights for Children, and it's been the best thing to happen to me in quite some time. I'm in the web department now, designing images and mood graphics for the soon-to-be-relaunched web store. It's a real change of pace for me, and I'm loving every minute of it.

In other, not so good news, my pup Luna was diagnosed with T-cell Lymphoma on August 1, and she was given an estimated 4 to 8 months to live. Even with aggressive treatment from some of the best doctors in the midwest, she lasted only 2 months; we said goodbye on October 1. It's left a very large hole in my soul. She was 9 years old.

I've had several comicons this fall; the Cincinnati Comics Expo and Detroit FanFare in September, and Kokomo-Con and Mid-Ohio Con this past month. I've got a whole stack of new commissions and con sketches that I produced for those shows, so I'll be uploading those for the foreseeable future. Hope you see something you like - as always, unless they are labeled "commission", they are probably for sale. Contact me for info if you're interested.

I released a new book of short stories this past August called "6 Stories". It's a digest-sized ashcan with 6 short stories culled from various previous publications, collected under one cover for the first time. There are still a few copies left, if you would like to order one of your own. They are $5 plus postage to the US, $8 shipped anywhere else in the world, and they each come with a sketch on the inside front page. Again, contact me for details.

I hope to get back to drawing some professional comics this winter, as my job situation has become a lot less stressful. More news on that as it becomes available. Thanks, as always, for all the favorites and comments. Even if I don't have the chance to respond personally to all of them, please know that I do appreciate each and every one.

Oh, and one last thing -

A THOUSAND EYES. Thanks to :icondalgoda7: as he is now my 500th watcher. I think this is pretty significant. I'm going to try to get together a special drawing to commemorate it. Thanks to all 500 of you!

The Off-Season

Tue Nov 23, 2010, 5:40 PM
Things are winding down for 2010. Convention season is over, and I'm taking a break between projects for a few weeks. I'll add my 2011 convention tour schedule here as it becomes available; I'm expecting about a dozen stops, hopefully to a show near you.

Commissions are still open, as always, starting at $30 for 9x12", and $50 for 11x15".

In the meantime, here's where to find me online:

Thanks again to everyone for the comments, favourites, and support. Can't get enough of it; you're the best.

Everyone have a happy and safe Holiday season!

Fall convention season

Tue Oct 26, 2010, 5:11 AM
Mid-Ohio-Con is in less than 2 weeks! I'll be doing free sketches all weekend, and commissions will be available, depending on how long the list is. If you'd like to schedule a commission ahead of time and pick it up at the show, get on the list now, as it's starting to fill up already! 9x12" pieces start at $30; 11x14" start at $50, 10-minute ink sketches are $10. Send me a note or an e-mail, and I'll get underway early. This means you usually get a better piece, as I'll have a chance to gather reference, and don't have to rush to finish during the show. I'll also have the new 2010 Studio Sketchbook by myself and Dave Aikins, with all-new stuff; a nice companion piece to our 2007 edition. Each book comes with an original sketch by both of us. The price is $5 each, or both for $8. Lastly, I still have some copies of my new "Endless Portfolio", a collection of 7 art prints based on each member of Neil Gaiman's Endless, in a signed/numbered envelope. Baltimore Comicon and NEW ART

Fri Aug 6, 2010, 11:22 AM
I'm getting my act together for Baltimore Comicon this year - actually kind of on time. So just a note to alert anyone that may be attending to please stop by and say hello! I'll be doing free sketches all day long, and commissions will be available, depending on how long the list is. If you'd like to schedule a commission ahead of time and pick it up at the show, get on the list now! 9x12" pieces start at $30; 11x14" start at $50. Send me a note or an e-mail, and I'll get underway early. This means you usually get a better piece, as I'll have a chance to gather reference, and don't have to rush to finish during the show.

Baltimore Comicon will be in Baltimore, MD. on August 28-29. Hope to see some of you there!

See the rest of my convention schedule below; the same rules apply for anyone who would like sketches or commissions.

My latest project at work is an online semi-interactive comic book for the web, called EX1LE. I've finished two "issues" so far, all drawn digitally with color from my co-worker David Will. Both books are available online now for a "Pay-What-You-Want" rate, and it's starting to take off. It was just launched this week, and is seeing some success already. If you're interested, click over to www.ournewgame.com and see what the fuss is all about. If the first two issues are a success, more will be coming. I'm already underway on the third issue, and it's just getting better. And as always, if you DO check it out, stop back by and let me know what you think!

And one last thing - The Phantom: Generations #13 is IN STORES NOW. I'm a little late; I think it came out last month. But stop by your local comics shop and ask for it! It was colored beautifully by Patrick J. Williams; I'm quite proud of the final product. If you do pick one up, let me know what you think!

Thanks as always for all the Favourites and Watches and such; I do appreciate your support.

Summer updates

Fri Jun 18, 2010, 10:58 AM
WEBSITE UPDATE!

My personal site, www.B3NN3TT.com, has FINALLY been completely overhauled and re-launched. You'll see many of the same things appearing here in this gallery, along with LOTS more corporate and design work that you probably didn't even know I did. Click on over and have a look around, if you're so inclined.

COMICS UPDATE!

Keep an eye out on store shelves for my upcoming issue of THE PHANTOM: GENERATIONS. Issue 13 will be in stores soon! I'll update when I get a definite release date. In the meantime, here's what the cover will look like:

Story by Robert Weinberg, art by Yours Truly. Check it out!

APPEARANCES!

I've added a few dates to my summer/fall convention schedule, so please take note below! Free sketches for anyone who asks; do stop by and say hello if I'm in your neck o' the woods.

FEATURES!

Also be sure to check out the Ferret Press/PANEL blog. Myself and my group of central-Ohio compatriots shoot the breeze about comics, pop culture, and whatever else is in the news. Every Wednesday is "Character Wednesday", when we all throw down with a sketch of a famous (or infamous) comics/movies/video games/pop-culture character, suggested a week ahead of time. The range of interpretations, approaches, and techniques is always cool to see.

Journal History

ShoutBoard

I have lots of friends on deviantArt whose galleries are CRIMINALLY overlooked. So please, stop in and show these folks the love they deserve!

:iconstevenrussellblack: My friend Steve does magnificently sensitive paintings and drawings in an alarmingly unique style. He's been working alongside me in the PANEL anthologies since day one, and he's only getting better. Watch now, thank me later.

:iconbyronwinton: My friend Byron has a classical approach, and produces outrageously laborious paintings and drawings with ludicrous amounts of detail. He's done a fair number of book, comics, and CD covers, as well as gig posters and fliers for dozens of metal/industrial/goth bands in the Pittsburgh area. Go meet him in person at Wizard World Philadelphia!

:icondrawrobot: I've known Tom for a seriously long time; in fact, he was my roommate for 2 yeas in college at CCAD. Tom's brain is a twisted wonderland of insanity, mashed through a pop-culture screen and stirred in the hollowed-out shell of a console television set. If you don't like it, then you just don't get it.
